Senior Systems Administrator
Part of a global team, the primary role for this position provides OS and hardware administration of Markit's Production, QA and Development web, application and database servers and environments. This position also assists with technical support and break/fix issues, recognizing reoccurring issues and proposing and implementing solutions to prevent them, and designing and implementing technology solutions to streamline systems administration.
Duties and Accountabilities:
Specifically, the candidate will be responsible for:
- Managing 100+ Sun Risc and some HP/Dell x86 servers running Redhat AS/ES, Debian, Solaris, and Windows Server, and striving for 100% uptime
- Working and coordinating with a global systems administration and operational support team, including a UK-based counterpart, and leveraging multiple time zones to provide extended support hours and highest level of service possible
- Configuring and troubleshooting application, web, mail services and other technologies relevant to Markit’s products and services
- Maintaining a broad knowledge of operating systems and hardware and making recommendations on improving administration, availability, scalability, and disaster recovery
- Documenting systems design, configuration, and administration items for the purposes of educating new hires and to provide better and consistent global support
- Monitoring system logs and status and responding to business-impacting critical alerts, both in and out of office hours
- Providing nights and weekends on-call support for critical business functions.
- Enforcing change management controls on production and QA systems.
- Coordinating with development teams for releases of in-house and third party software
- Working with Office and Desktop support personnel to resolve server-side issues
The position is located in Markit’s Westchester office in White Plains, NY.
Skills and Experience:
- 7+ years experience in Sun/Solaris systems administration
Advanced knowledge and troubleshooting of Sun hardware and Solaris OS and HP DL hardware and Red Hat Linux - Advanced knowledge of installation, configuration, and management of Apache, Tomcat, JBoss, and WebLogic
- Familiarity with Sybase or Oracle running on Sun/Solaris or HP/Linux
- Knowledge of networking infrastructure and security best practices
- Knowledge of web application security, including common vulnerabilities and strategies to mitigate attacks
- Proficient UNIX scripting capabilities of one of the following; perl, Korn, or Bash shells
- Must be motivated and be able to learn new skills quickly
- Ability to effectively communicate issues and resolutions to all levels of the organization, both verbally and in written documentation
- Must live within 60 minute commute to White Plains office
